Course aim

To develop an understanding of basic cell structure and function, body fluids, principles of homeostasis, cell signalling and cell division, structure and function of tissues and basic anatomy of organs, respiratory, cardiovascular, muscle, nervous and excretory systems, and manner in which physiological systems interact. To develop an understanding of basic research ethos.

Course content

Cells and cell structure; organelles; membranes (structures and channels); membrane pumps; osmosis; mitosis and meiosis; biomolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids); cellular receptors; chemical messengers; tissues (epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous); basic anatomy of organs (heart, blood vessels, lymphatic system, lungs, kidney, brain, gut, liver, pancreas) and glands (adrenals, gonads, pituitary). Quantitative and qualitative research-specific skills.
