To build on already acquired knowledge of the relationship between diet, nutrition, exercise and health and to develop an understanding of the place of nutrition within therapeutic management of patients in pharmacy practice settings.
Nutrient sufficiency and human needs across the lifespan, with a focus on Australian society and nutritionally vulnerable groups and concepts of energy balance and weight control. Nutritional issues in chronic diseases (such as obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes). Identification and characterisation of bioactive components in food and scientific studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of bioactives on biomarkers, or physiological functions. Prophylactic versus reactive treatment of disease with functional foods, nutraceuticals and medicines. Delivery of functional ingredients in enriched foods – issues of formulation, product development, encapsulation or slow release of protected components, consumer acceptance and perceptions of functional foods. History of functional foods and the potential for the future. Interactions between food and medicines and mechanisms of action. Toxicological aspects of nutraceuticals and functional foods. Definition of regulatory requirements that relate to therapeutic claims for functional foods and nutraceuticals and evaluation of controversial issues in nutrition. A knowledge of health literacy levels within Australian an appreciation of communication methods within the Australian community.
