Applied Podiatry Practice 301

Course aim

To develop student skills in the application of podiatry assessment and treatment techniques, including surgical techniques, to develop student knowledge about issues affecting rural health delivery and skills in the application of physical techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of common ailments of the lower limb.

Course content

Supervised clinical practice. Clinical techniques in the management of the routine and at risk patient. Clinical Pharmacology in podiatry practice. Community screening and education practices. Rural health placement. Assessment techniques for surgical management; Operating room procedures and protocols; Patient education techniques ; Principles of ethical practice in surgical treatment – consent, definitions of consent, practitioner responsibilities, recording and communications. Manufacture and evaluation of orthoses, dispensing techniques. Case studies in clinical practice, clinical problem solving techniques and resources.

Rural Health Workshop: Primary Health Care principles in the rural health setting, issues in service delivery; case studies in podiatry management in rural and remote settings; role of the multidisciplinary health team; role of outreach services; management of podiatry emergencies; workforce planning; health promotion in rural context; Aboriginal cultural awareness; issues in delivery of services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
