Course aim

The aim of this course is to enable students to adapt their knowledge of midwifery to the contemporary context of midwifery practice in Australia.

Course content

Extension and adaptation of existing knowledge for contemporary midwifery practice in the Australian context. Midwifery models of care/woman/family centred care. Theory and practice to support clinical reasoning and decision making in the midwifery practice context. Midwifery praxis of normal labour and birth. Management of clients with consequences of hazardous/harmful use of alcohol & other drugs. Deviations from normal and neonatal care. Discharge planning. Aligning practice with professional standards, codes, and guidelines that regulate nursing and midwifery practice.
