Course aim

The aim of this course is to enable students to extend their nursing knowledge and practice to provide holistic nursing care for people experiencing acute, complex and long term health problems requiring lifestyle adaptations and a high level of nursing intervention.

Course content

Extension and adaptation of existing knowledge for contemporary nursing practice in the Australian context. Development of clinical reasoning and decision making skills; holistic assessment; occupational health and safety related to risk management of self and others. Professional communication and cultural competence in the nursing practice context. Life span approach to physical examination, infection control, alternative health modalities, Indigenous health, pharmacology (pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics related to common drugs groups) including primary health care/prevention. Management of clients with consequences of hazardous/harmful use of alcohol & other drugs. Caring for clients with complex illness states of the cardiac, respiratory, neurological, endocrine, urinary, gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal systems. Clinical laboratory and simulation activities including acute and chronic pain management, wound care, biotechnology, working as a part of the health care team (including referrals) and mandatory skills of manual handling, CPR and medication calculations
