The aim of this course is to enable students to adapt and enhance existing nursing/midwifery knowledge and skills to the contemporary Australian health system in preparation for practice.
The Australian healthcare system including factors affecting health care and health care delivery and health care quality and safety. Australian Government health priorities including indigenous health. Ethical theory and principles, codes of ethics and conduct; ethical decision-making; medico-legal jurisprudence related to negligence, consent; documentation, restraint; guardianship and mandatory reporting, medications; mental health. Nursing regulation and the role of nurse regulatory authorities. Development of professional language competence including use of medical terminology, written and interpersonal communication, and development of cultural competence. Problem solving and decision making frameworks for nursing and midwifery practice, being a team member, management, leadership and nursing research/evidence-based practice. The role of professional standards in nursing practice including national and state codes, standards and guidelines that regulate nursing and midwifery practice. Application of critical thinking to nursing/midwifery practice.
