Course aim

To extend students’ knowledge, skills and understanding relevant to the teaching of mathematics and development of numeracy with children aged from birth to 8 years.

Course content

Application of detailed knowledge of all curriculum documents, materials and organisational requirements for mathematics development in children from birth to eight years; examination of numeracy in the contexts of young children’s experiences and everyday routines at home, in the community, in early childhood centres and schools, integrated across curriculum areas; planning for mathematical development with these numeracy contexts using prior knowledge and extending children’s social and physical experiences as a means of developing their mathematical thinking and concept development; examination of the context of interactive play and language in early mathematical development.
