Course aim

The Systems Mathematics course is one component of an Associate Degree in Defence Systems program which aims to teach a cognitive, yet practical, approach to its constituent subjects. The course includes tuition in analytical and deductive skills, delivered within a practical context. The aim of the course is to provide sufficient knowledge of engineering/systems mathematics and statistics implemented via a spreadsheet program to model and derive the properties of selected functions associated with the physical world and to calculate probabilities of component failure and associated systems reliability.

Course content

Algebra and basic mathematical function concepts and techniques; function description and graphical visualisation; maxima and minima; characteristics of common functions (exponentials, steps, impulses and sinusoids). Differential and integral calculus and basic numerical methods for their calculation. Introduction to concepts and techniques of the Fourier representation of functions/signals: time, frequency, amplitude, phase, principles of the Fourier transform, spectral representation. Random variables; descriptive statistics; risk analysis and failure calculations. Computer-based representation and analysis of mathematical functions and mathematical methods: spreadsheet calculations (arithmetic) using Excel.
