To provide students with an opportunity to explore the issues that information managers face in building and maintaining library collections in all formats, across a range of information organisations and users' needs, in accordance with the basic principles of collection development.
Aspects surrounding the acquisition, management and life cycle of collections; formulation of collection and selection policies; fluid formats; evaluative criteria; the collection process and user expectations; reviews and reviewing; relationship of the publishing industry and collection development; electronic impact on collections; open access and institutional repositories, stacks management and library design; risk management; virtual collections; special, public, university, corporate and school perspectives; collection de-acquisition and other challenges; overview of preservation principles and digital preservation issues.
