Course aim

To provide healthcare professionals with an understanding of the principles of pharmacology and their application to rational drug use within the primary healthcare setting.

Course content

Australia’s National Medicines Policy and the National Strategy for the Quality Use of Medicines. Basic principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics; Pathophysiology, therapeutic management and practice issues in the management of 4 topics of choice selected from the following: antimicrobial agents: cardiovascular diseases (including hypertension; heart failure; angina), respiratory diseases (including asthma and URTI), gastrointestinal disorders;,endocrine (including diabetes, adrenal disease and thyroid disease), psychology and neurology (including epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, depression), pain management (including anaesthesia), women’s health (including contraception, hormone replacement therapy and menopause), drugs of dependence (including alcohol, nicotine, amphetamines and opiates) and paediatric pharmacology.
