Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the occurrence of coexisting or complex health problems in rural populations, and the influence of rurality on their aetiology, chronicity and management.

Course content

The content of the course will include: taxonomy of relevant terms; epidemiology of comorbid conditions; rural & remote health services and access compared to urban, distance / remoteness and development of chronicity, continuity of management & inter-agency collaboration, self community & employer management; age & gender specific issues; alcohol and other drug use and related problems, harm minimisation; mental health and common disorders, suicide and self-harm; abuse; issues for people with disability and their carers; health and safety problems related to living and working environments (farms, animal related, mines, heavy industry, transport); comorbidity in Indigenous populations; socioeconomic issues, education and health impacting upon nutrition and physical activity; use and misuse of prescription drugs.
