Course aim

To develop individual and team skills of mobile digital product development, from idea generation and selection through to business proposal and pitch.

Course content

Workshop provides an opportunity for UniSA students to engage with other students, members of industry, and members of the public to develop an idea for a product or service in the mobile digital technology field. Workshop participants are assisted to form themselves into teams with complementary backgrounds such as creative skills, information technology, business and marketing, reflecting the blend of skills needed for successful product development in this field.

Student teams will develop a case for a mobile product or service. Each team will initiate several concepts for a product or service, and select one for further development, including business, technical and marketing plans. Throughout the process, teams will be guided by professional mentors and participate in intensive workshops with instruction from industry practitioners. The project will culminate in the team presenting a pitch of the product and associated business case to a panel of industry leaders.

One of the purposes of the workshop is to function as an incubator for start-up companies in the mobile arena, and therefore emphasis is placed on the development of a business proposal and on the final “pitch” day at which groups present their product and business proposal to a panel of industry experts and investors.

This course will be delivered through 9 one-day workshops, with team meetings with mentors and with an industry panel.

The total contact time is about 70 hours. A considerable proportion of the work to develop the business proposal and pitch will be done in the contact time. The total time a typical student will spend on the course (contact time plus team meetings plus individual study) is estimated at 140 hours. The course will be delivered by the  not-for-profit consortium Venture Dorm. Venture Dorm and students will be working with students from other tertiary institutions as well as non-students’.




Satisfactory completion of the first and second years of an appropriate undergraduate program. In addition, students will be required to submit an application, which will be assessed on features such as the quality of their ideas, positive attitude, entrepreneurial spirit and relevant background and skills. The assessment will be carried out by a joint academic and industry panel, and completion of enrolment will be subject to the application being successful. Applications will be accepted from students in any undergraduate program, including but not limited to programs from the School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences, School of Communication, and the Division of Business.
