Enabling Occupation: Community Orientation 300

Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop students’ capacity to analyse issues from a community perspective and also develop knowledge and skills for utilising community approaches to respond to issues that impact on occupational performance and health.

Course content

Understanding the factors that impact on occupational performance and health from a community perspective, including socio-economic, political, physical, interpersonal and cultural dimensions of environment. Analysis of issues that influence community approaches to practice in different settings including rural and urban practice settings and countries other than Australia. Impacts of cultural and health beliefs on peoples understanding and response to health challenges and subsequent approaches to practice. Approaches to identifying community strengths, resources and needs, negotiating targeted outcomes and developing action plans to address challenges to occupational performance and health, using theoretical approaches relevant to occupational therapy and community practice. Exploration of the occupational performance and health issues for individuals and communities associated with suicide, infectious diseases (HIV AIDS), changing employment patterns and conditions, public health issues such as eye disease and chronic disease. Overview of occupational therapy and other approaches to the management of these issues and associated needs. Explain and demonstrate strategies and skills for disseminating and communicating information that are relevant for community practice.
