The aim of this course is to further develop the breadth and depth of student’s knowledge of the impact of a range of conditions and disorders on occupational performance.
Identifying and utilising clients’ strengths and resources in occupational therapy programs. Exploration of the occupational impact of issues associated with developmental delay neoplasm, grief and adjustment, personality disorders, schizophrenia, dementia, substance use, forensic issues, acute myocardial infarction, myofacial pain and burns. Overview of occupational therapy and other approaches to the management of these conditions and associated needs. Case management as a model of practice. Developing and implementing programs through occupation. Principles and techniques for positioning, splinting and scar and oedema management for people affected by burns. Systems approaches to understanding the involvement of family and others in health and occupational performance issues. Principles and issues in the preparing written practice records. Consultancy and working with organisational clients as approaches to practice. Understanding and application of strategies to support occupational performance including advocacy, partnering with clients, graded occupational programs, educational strategies and physical and electrical modalities. Legislative, ethical and medico-legal aspects of scenarios and their implications for practice, including the Mental Health Act, Guardianship and Administration Act. Exploration of the influences that cultural and health beliefs and values may have on peoples understanding and response to ill health, and the implications of these for practice. Introduction to issues associated with rural and remote practice.
