Course aim

The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of physical and mechanical properties of engineering materials, their selection for the manufacturing processes and their applications for environmentally responsible design and manufacture.

Course content

Mechanical and electrical properties of engineering materials, brittleness and toughness, improving mechanical properties, joining methods; fusion and welding; brazing, soldering and adhesives. Deformation processes, creep and wear, fatigue, heat treatment, ceramics and glasses, polymers, composites, thermal properties, selection and utilisation of materials, materials for aesthetic and industrial design.

Based on preliminary reading material; submission of tutorials at the end of each section, during class (Individual Work) , Examination, Project: Involves answering discussion questions based on lecture material and working through two case studies requiring selection of appropriate material and manufacturing process (Group Work)
