To introduce students to selected texts and key themes in the First and Second Testaments using current methods in critical biblical scholarship.
Students will develop knowledge of the bible as both sacred text and as literature, specifically a theological narrative. Students will explore the historical, social and cultural world of selected texts in the First and Second Testaments and makes use of historical-critical methodology and other contemporary approaches to the study of scripture. The variety of literary genres contained within the scriptures and the shaping of the text as a whole are studied through the focus texts. The Second Testament study situates Jesus in his first century Jewish context and explores the historical development of the gospels. The students will develop focussed analysis of one of the synoptic gospels, with recognition of the way in which the interpreter’s own reality shapes their understanding and use of the text.
