Course aim

To assist students to understand the principles of disease processes and underlying common pathological conditions that are relevant to medical radiation science.

Course content

Introduction to pathology, concepts of disease, aetiology, pathogenesis and reaction to disease. Stress, cell injury, adaptation: atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, metaplasia, dysplasia. Cell death and necrosis, reversible and irreversible injury. Inflammatory process, immune alterations, infectious processes. Acid-base and electrolyte imbalances. Host-parasite relationship, manifestations of infectious disease. Neoplasia: benign and malignant neoplasm, carcinogenesis, angiogenesis, metastasis, clinical aspects. Understanding of the pathological basis of systems including: haemopoietic, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, digestive, nervous, skeletal, endocrine, reproductive system.
