Nuclear Medicine Studies 3

Course aim

To provide students with opportunities to develop the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes leading to a more complex level of Nuclear Medicine clinical practice.

Course content

Anatomy, physiology and pathology of the central nervous system and other specific regions/areas in the body as related to radiopharmaceutical distribution and scan findings of specific Nuclear Medicine techniques; techniques of the central nervous system and positron emission tomography (PET) pertaining to adults and paediatrics; image quality and manipulation; accuracy of techniques; radiopharmaceuticals used and their mechanisms of uptake in relation to the central nervous system and positron emission tomography (PET) studies; advantages and disadvantages of positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) including co-registration with computed tomography (CT); radiation protection; verbal/non-verbal communication skills; patient care - handling difficult situations, processes involved with grief and loss, the unconscious patient, the disabled patient; team work including with other health care professionals; professionalism; ethics; legalities; medical terminology; situation analysis.
