To promote an understanding of the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health, with a specific focus on the health of indigenous Australians.
The content will include: consideration of the World Health Organization and its charter of the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health; the Ottawa Charter and consideration of the promotion of health; social determinants of health and attention to the proximal and distal factors affecting health; study of morbidity and mortality globally and the concept of Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs); the meaning of health to different geopolitical, racial, ethnic, social and cultural groups and throughout history; analysis of indigenous health conditions, and targeted priorities to improve indigenous health; and study of the health of indigenous Australians in relation to their history.
