Course aim

This course will develop an understanding of research supervision as a specialised form of teaching in higher education and provide an introduction to the supervision of research students at the University of South Australia.

Course content

The supervision of research students in national and international contexts; supervising at UniSA (policies, procedures, research degree graduate qualities); supervisory styles, models and relationships (expectations, responding to diversity, research cultures); stages of supervision (proposal, maintaining progress, thesis writing, examination); modes of supervision (face-to-face, online, distance); providing feedback on student writing; contemporary issues (academic integrity, research degree outcomes, research quality framework); scholarship of supervision.
While the institutional and national policy and administrative frameworks will focus on the supervision of students in higher degrees by research (HDR), the principles and practices will be relevant for all supervisors, including those who supervise students engaged in research within Honours and Postgraduate coursework programs.
