Course aim

This course aims to develop participants’ understanding of the role of assessment and evaluation in higher education and to provide an introduction to assessment and evaluation at the University of South Australia.

Course content

Part 1: Assessment: Definition of key terms; underpinning principles of sound assessment; policy and curriculum frameworks shaping assessment in higher education; purposes of assessment; types of assessment (criterion-based, norm-based, diagnostic, formative, summative); assessment methods and tools (rubrics, taxonomies); issues in assessment (grading, feedback, academic integrity, recognition of prior learning, accommodating students with special needs, on-line assessment); student participation in assessment (self- and peer assessment); recording and reviewing assessment practices; assessment at UniSA or other tertiary institution (policies, procedures, resources).
Part 2: Evaluation: Definitions of evaluation; standards for evaluation; policy and other frameworks shaping evaluation in higher education; purposes for evaluation (accountability, development, knowledge); evaluation models; types of evaluation (formative, summative); data-collection methods and tools (guided reflection, surveys, observation, inventories, focus groups); issues in evaluation (ethics, data quality); uses and outcomes of evaluation data; recording and reviewing evaluation practices; evaluation at UniSA or other tertiary institution (policies, procedures, resources).
