To develop students’ competence in critical analysis of the politics of contemporary Japanese identities.
Students will develop the ability to critically examine contemporary Japanese identity as unitary and static and the historical development of representations of Japanese homogeneity, the marginalising and exclusionary effects of such representations, and develops students' understanding of tensions in contemporary Japanese society and Japan’s place in the world, and Japanese citizenship and national identity.
