Course aim

To develop the technical knowledge, specialised software development skills for developing mobile applications on various platforms

Course content

Introduction and motivation. The rise of wireless and mobile communications. Technology drivers and consumer pull. Limitations, strengths and opportunities of development for mobile devices. Market development for mobile applications.
Mobile and wireless technology - platforms (devices and OS). Differences from conventional distributed systems. Restrictions and conventions. Standards. Handhelds v. desktop usage.
Mobile and wireless technology – networking technologies and standards.
Software development frameworks and tools. Programming mobile applications. Applicable programming language extensions and constraints.
Android application development (phones and pads).
iPhone/iPad development.
Legacy and emerging environments.
Current applications (local and international) – analysis of successes and failures.
Analysis and design techniques for mobile systems.
Mobile data management. Types and semantics of local/central data. Latency. Data summarisation and fragmentation.
User interface design for m-commerce and handheld platforms. Usability.
Location-based services. Examples and techniques.
Local industry case studies.
Security: user authentication, biometrics, network security.
