To familiarise students with the nature of Information systems in the healthcare domain with emphasis on their various roles in healthcare and specific technical, organisational and social challenges associated with their successful use. Students will develop an appreciation of the relationship of Information technology to healthcare.
Health vocabulary; Structure of healthcare systems. Information systems in health. Public health IS, health records, electronic health records, medical coding schemes, nature of clinical decision making, medical knowledge – evidence, guidelines, resources; Health information systems lifecycle and management; Requirements, acquisitions and tenders; Deployment – integration testing, training; System integration methods, legacy systems, standards; User acceptance, maintenance and upgrade; security, privacy/confidentiality, ethics and other related issues; medico-legal framework; Data sharing and aggregation – motivations and constraints; Case studies: Chronic disease management; Massive general hospital needs a new system.
