Land Use, Planning and Sustainability

Course aim

To develop the concepts of land use planning and sustainability and understand what these mean for future rural and urban landscapes.

Course content

Land use classification and land capability. Land use systems: cropping, horticulture, forestry, grazing, intensive livestock, aquaculture, indigenous lands. Land degradation and contamination issues. Urban land use: commercial, retail, industrial and housing. Rationale for land use planning. Principles and concepts of land use planning. Sustainability concepts: implications for rural landscape and cities. Climate change and its implications for land use and land use planning.
