Course aim

The purpose of this course is to introduce postgraduate students in technical disciplines to the broad concepts, processes, techniques and tools applicable to the design and development of large, complex socio-technical systems. The course illustrates these practices both in a Defence context, where the discipline of Systems Engineering is applied extensively, as well as in non-Defence contexts. Examples of the latter domain include the design and development of complex civil infrastructure projects. This course establishes a foundation of knowledge that will enable the student to progress to more advanced levels of postgraduate programs in Systems Engineering.

Course content

Definition of Military and non-Military Systems Integration; Concept of total system of interest; System lifecycle from concept to disposal; Systems engineering standards including ISO 15288, EIA 632, IEEE 1220, MIL-STD-499; Systems engineering process; Project lifecycle models, strengths and weaknesses, applicability, interaction with acquisition processes; Value of SE processes; Model-based systems engineering; Role of engineering disciplines; Limitations of traditional methods for systems development; COTS and MOTS elements in systems engineering; Theoretical foundations: development and philosophy of science, disciplinary divisions, philosophy of engineering, introduction to systems sciences, complexity, constraints in general, decision analysis processes; Constraints in the defence systems engineering process. Constraints to systems engineering in non-Defence contexts.
