Course aim

To provide understanding and knowledge of the theory and practice of environmental planning and policy development in both governmental and other organisational settings. This will involve the development of skills in assessing and writing environmental policies, knowledge of the policy planning cycle and specific environmental policies, and understanding of the strategic environmental planning process.

Course content

The course will cover the following topics: introduction to the need for and role of environmental planning and policy; comprehensive study of the policy cycle (ref text); the context of strategic environmental planning; the theory and principles of strategic environmental planning; development of a strategic environmental plan or environmental policy; key federal and state environmental legislation.
