Course aim

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a predictive technique which is widely applied throughout the world in relation to major development projects. It is also used to assess the potential effects of policies, programmes and plans on the environment. Sustainability Appraisal is an emerging technique used to further test the social, economic and environmental implications and coherence of policies and plans. The course aims to provide an overview of these techniques and a detailed examination of a range of component aspects with the overall aim of producing critically aware practitioners who are able to project manage the technique at a strategic or project level.

Course content

The development of EIA techniques in an international perspective. Strategic Environmental Assessment, Sustainability appraisal, Project level environmental impact assessment
Components of the above including: Screening, scoping, impact identification, baseline studies, magnitude and significance of impacts, mitigation, EIA project management, cost benefit analysis. Quality appraisal of environmental statements. Critical appraisal of the value of EIA approaches to environmental problems.
