To provide the students with foundational knowledge in the areas of pathophysiology, microbiology and pharmacology that will enable them to understand how disease processes may come about and influence normal functioning. This knowledge will build on the students’ concept of health and disease providing specific information about disease processes, especially those identified by the Australian National Health Priorities. Students will develop an understanding of rationales that underpin primary health care measures and other interventions utilised in the community and health care settings.
Tissue injury and disease, cellular adaptation to injury stress, mechanisms of inflammation, tissue healing and pain, basic principles of pharmacology, inflammation and pain, overview of peripheral nervous system pharmacology, pharmacological interventions in specific disease processes, microbiological concepts, disruption of the blood and blood flow, disorders of blood cells and blood clotting, disruption of systemic and coronary blood flow, blood pressure disorders and circulatory shock, myocardial infarction and heart failure, altered respiratory function, disorders of the gastrointestinal system, nutritional balance and metabolism, type 1 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes, central nervous system disorders, disorders of the reproductive system.
