Course aim

To introduce student to the basic principles and techniques of graphical communication through map making and fundamentals of map design.
To provide an understanding of map projections, coordinate systems and datums as used in mapping, surveying and spatial information systems.

Course content

Introduction to maps, coordinate systems, reference surfaces, datums and map projections.
Principles of cartography and graphical communication. Types of maps – map design and scale distortion in maps.
Principles of map projections. Typical surveying and mapping projections. Map datums including AGD, GDA, WGS and transformations between coordinate systems and datums. Ellipsoidal and Australian Map Grid computations.
