Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop in students a comprehensive understanding of the physiology, pathophysiology and biochemistry implicated in the relationships between maternal & fetal nutrition, obesity in children & adults, and certain adult diseases.

Course content

Basic principles of quantitative and qualitative research and research design (including epidemiological, observational, Randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analysis).  Pregnancy, fetal development, and maternal-fetal interactions; the impact of varying maternal & fetal nutrition on patterns of postnatal growth. Physiological changes influencing appetite and its regulation in adolescence. Significance of biochemical metabolic regulation in middle age. Under-nutrition in the elderly. Pathophysiology of nutrition-related conditions.
