This course will enable health professionals to expand and extend their knowledge of the current practice and principles underlying the promotion of cardiovascular health in primary and secondary healthcare settings.
The anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system; pathophysiology of biomedical, lifestyle/behavioural risk factors that contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease; absolute risk and the assessment tools used to identify individual risk of cardiovascular disease; principles of biomedical risk factor management: diagnostic testing, pharmacological agents, and lifestyle/behavioural management; principles of primary health care, health promotion, health education and behaviour change models as they apply to the contemporary management of biomedical and lifestyle/behavioural risk factors; evidence and principles underlying the planning, development and implementation of multidisciplinary, cardiovascular health programs in primary and secondary care settings; normal and abnormal cardiovascular responses to exercise, principles of exercise stress testing, structure of cardiac rehabilitation models; principles of evaluating the effectiveness of cardiovascular health from the individual to the program.
