Course aim

To introduce aspects of information systems and the impact of Information Technology on society. To introduce basic concepts of software engineering and computer systems.

Course content

Information systems theory: What is an information system? The inter-relationship between organisations and information systems; Identification of fundamental types of information systems used to provide business benefit; the need for an effective information systems development process, including foundations of systems theory; planning for new systems and various approaches to systems development; the use of information systems and technology for competitive advantage including e-business. Database systems: History and motivation for database systems; components of database systems; DBMS functions. Data modeling: relational data model. Relational databases: Mapping conceptual schema to a relational schema; entity and referential integrity. Database query languages: SQL. Software processes: Software life-cycle and process models; process assessment models. Social context of computing: Introduction to the social implications of computing; social implications of networked communication; growth of, control of, and access to the Internet. Privacy and civil liberties: Ethical and legal basis for privacy protection; privacy implications of massive database systems; technological strategies for privacy protection; freedom of expression in cyberspace; international and intercultural implications. Computer crime: History and examples of computer crime; viruses, worms, and Trojan horses; crime prevention strategies.
