To introduce and provide an overview of visual culture from the ancient to the modern world, with an emphasis upon the intellectual, social and political influences affecting design and its language.
Students will develop major design themes by exploring the changing modes of representation and meaning from the ancient times to the contemporary world. Students will develop foundations for understanding and ‘reading’ societal and cultural symbolism in design and art ; methods for decoding the language of visual culture and visual communication and gaining insight into critical social perspectives are introduced.
