To develop introductory knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Australian cultures and the impact of colonisation, as the basis for developing culturally competent practice in psychology.
Students will develop an understanding of the nature of culture; The Dreaming; kinship; social organisation and land; Individual and Collectivist cultures; identity and self-concept in Collectivist cultures. Historical processes; initial contact; disease; violence and dispossession: missions "Civilising and Christianising"; Separation and Segregation; Social Darwinism; institutionalisation, Assimilation, Resistance; political movements; the psychological consequences of colonialism and dispossession; diversity in contemporary cultures; demographics and social indicators; strategies for working effectively in Indigenous contexts; implications for practice.
