Course aim

To ensure graduates have gained experience working in a professional workplace and have been given exposure to some professional experience in the planning area.

Course content

The course content involves two components:

Component 1
A minimum placement of 30 days within an approved professional planning office comprising part or full time attendance i.e. provided the 30 days are completed within the period of June to August . Students may negotiate periods of part or full time attendance as appropriate.


Component 2
A seminar program structured to support placements and in particular involving peer discussion of Placement Presentations and guest lectures on the ongoing management of planning oriented work experience placements. Students should obtain at least two of the following experiences in the workplace:

  • Development assessment, development plan preparation, policy advice, environmental impact assessment, community consultation, research into local planning matters, articulation of community interests and viewpoints on planning matters.
  • Students should experience features of work that planners share with most professionals: office management, report writing, legislated obligations regarding office practices, dealing with colleagues, and stakeholders, time management. Student reflection on the educational and professional value of the experience through their journal

There is an expectation that Planning Law ARCH 3042, Social Planning Techniques ARCH 3018, Regional Planning Workshop ARCH 3020, and Policy and Development Assessment Workshop N ARCH 3056 will have been completed unless credit has been granted.
