Politics of Language Choice

Course aim

To deepen students’ understanding of and ability to interpret societies’ decisions about language as shaping and shaped by identities, values and relations of power and influence between individuals and groups.

Course content

Students will develop critical knowledge of the way that human societies make decisions about the forms and uses of the languages they use and learn. They will develop their capability to critically analyse language practices as symbolic choices and how this impacts on areas such as language planning and policy, language education and linguistic rights.
