Course aim

To provide students with an introduction to the nature of scientific research, particularly laboratory-based research; information retrieval techniques; the student-supervisor relationship; record keeping; time management; bibliography management; OH&S in laboratories; research ethics; presentation skills; report-writing; reading topic.

Course content

This course is intended to provide an introduction to undertaking a research project. It is a self-directed study in your area of research that involves searching the scientific literature to 1) understand and be able to describe to others the background and current state of knowledge, 2) develop a suitable methodology, 3) establish a research plan, and 4) commence research work on the project. You will demonstrate knowledge of your research project in an oral presentation towards the end of the course.

It is assumed that you will demonstrate a sound knowledge from having completed an undergraduate program in the subject area of the research project. Research Theory and Practice ENGG 4005 should be taken in conjunction with this course.
