To develop students' understanding of the cinematic tradition of Italy, from neorealism to the present; and examine how Italian cinema represents the evolution of social institutions, cultures and conceptions of Italian identity.
Students will analyse Italian cinema from early silent film to the present, conceptions of Italian national identity through film, including representations of landscape, architecture, opera and popular culture. Students will explore Italy's cultural landscape through cinematic representations of gender, regional cultures and emigration/immigration, including impact of politics, organised crime, sport and food.
