Course aim

To provide students with the knowledge base and learning skills to contribute to the podiatry profession in matters of drugs and therapeutics

Course content

Applied pharmacokinetics; pharmacokinetic variation in disease and different age groups; pharmacokinetic drug interactions; therapeutic drug monitoring; Australia’s National Medicines Policy and the National Strategy for the Quality Use of Medicines. Pathophysiology, therapeutic management and practice issues in the management of infective diseases, clinical pharmacotherapeutics of anti-infective agents. Pathophysiology, therapeutic management and practice issues in the management of various disease states; cardiovascular diseases (including hypertension; heart failure; angina; clotting; coronary artery disease); respiratory diseases (including asthma and URTI); rheumatic diseases; endocrine (including diabetes, adrenal disease and thyroid disease), psychology and neurology (including epilepsy and psychosis; pain (including anaesthesia).  The syllabus includes discussions on the use of complementary medicines and non-prescription products in the management of these disease states. Critical literature review and drug information.
