Course aim

This course provides the opportunity for students to explore: the impacts of tourism on indigenous peoples; and the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political motivations that encourage Indigenous peoples to engage in tourism.

Course content

Context of Indigenous involvement in tourism; types of Indigenous involvement in tourism; demand for Indigenous tourism product; what Indigenous product is offered internationally, nationally, state-wide and locally; motivations for Indigenous involvement including economic, cultural, social, political; motivations for tourists’ demand including the search for the “noble savage”, “cannibal tours” and responsible tourism; demands for social justice through tourism and indigenous rights in tourism; policy and planning contexts such as set by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tourism Industry Strategy and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; management issues pertaining to Indigenous Tourism including the debate concerning community-based tourism versus individual entrepreneurship; Indigenous Tourism operations in the practical context of the tourism industry; potential of Reconciliation Tourism; the ecological contexts of Indigenous Tourism and particularly relations with National Parks; comparative analysis of Indigenous Tourism experiences from around the world; future scenarios.
