Course aim

The aim of this course is to provide the student with advanced knowledge and skills to confidently and competently manage the nursing care of the patient in a critical care setting. Advanced critical care incorporates emergency and long term life support of patients with critical disease states and this course aims to prepare nurses to provide organized, comprehensive care to these patients which includes the management of sophisticated technology.

Course content

This course is designed to extend on the knowledge and skills acquired in Critical Care Nursing 1. The content is suitable for nurses working in clinical settings where patients with life threatening physiological crises are nursed. Content covered includes nursing application of microbiology; patient assessment including advanced data collection and interpretation, pain assessment; clinical reasoning, problem solving and decision making; assessment of complications experienced by patients with critical disease states; (maladaptive responses specific to children and neonates with critical illness; dialysis, applied pharmacology; transportation and retrieval of the critically ill patient (including the ventilated patient); the critically ill and technology, ethical decision making in critical care.
