Course aim

Students will develop the advanced knowledge and skills to confidently and competently manage nursing and health care of the critically ill patient in an intensive care setting.

Course content

Evidence based practice in critical care nursing; applied anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology; history taking and physical examination; electrocardiography; haemodynamic monitoring; advanced life support, nursing management of the patient with acute respiratory disorders, airway management; endotracheal and tracheostomy intubation and maintenance; assisted/mechanical ventilation, fluid and electrolyte management, acid/base balance; anaesthesia and related pharmacology, professional, legal and ethical aspects of nursing care; transportation and retrieval of the critically ill patient; rehabilitation of the critically ill patient; documentation; organisational and time management strategies for effective delivery of nursing care.
