Course aim

To gain on-site experience in the performance of the surgical pathology ‘cut-up’ process to enable the identification, selection, processing, description and recording of surgical specimens according to the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) Requirements.

Course content

Students will receive a specified program of instruction and supervised work practice as described in the NPAAC.  Requirements for surgical pathology specimen preparation. The program is based on the development of competency in surgical cut-up and passes through five levels: observation of the cut-up, supervised practice involving only tissue transfer (simple specimens), supervised cut-up of non-complex specimens, limited independent practice, autonomous practice. Students are expected to become competent in dissection based on tissue listed under the NPAAC (simple, non-complex, complex). Study of the cut-up manual.
