Writing and Reading Poetry

Course aim

To introduce students to a range of poetic forms, subjects and techniques, in order to enable them to write, read and critically discuss poetic texts.

Course content

Understanding poetry; fixed form poetry and free verse; reading/writing/editing poetry; preparing material for publication; researching poetry published in South Australia; getting integrated into the local and national poetry scene; establishing contact with the structures operating in the field, such as the SA Writers’ Centre, Arts SA, Australia Council, local presses, Friendly Street Poets and other organisations, to maintain future professional development.

Prerequisite(s)

At least two courses in Writing and Creative Communication at Level 2/3 or by negotiation with the Course Coordinator. Not available to students who have successfully completed COMM 2057 Writing and Reading Texts A: Poetry.

Assignment 1: Poetry folio (Part 1), Assignment 2: Poetry folio Part 2 and presentation, Assignment 3: Australian poet project (oral presentation with poster)
