Reworking the Canon

Course aim

To build on students' textual intervention skills by examining the ways in which canonical literary texts have been reworked and reproduced in contemporary society, and to use these as a basis for students' own creative and critical writing.

Course content

The students will develop knowledge on the formation of literary canons, notable writers and producers, literature as cultural capital and its place in contemporary society, the differences between screen representations and print representations, how a literary text may be turned into a film/TV/multimedia presentation, and the historical and cultural circumstances of stage, film and television versions of literary texts.  Using this knowledge, students will analyse questions of literariness and the continuing desire to reproduce literary texts and the possibilities for reinventing them.
