To introduce students to the process of critically analysing organisational conflict.
Causes of workplace conflict, economic rationalism, corporate managerialism, precarious work, work intensification and job insecurity. Industrial relations legislation, policies and practices, management – worker tensions around scarce resources, values and cultures of organisations; diversity, structural factors and imbalances of power (eg. gender, ethnicity). Leadership styles, poor communication and change management practices; downsizing, redundancy and justice; workplace bullying; sexual harassment; prevention and early intervention; workplace grievance processes; legal/non-legal matters in workplace conflicts; designing dispute resolution systems; approaches to managing conflict: education, advocacy, negotiation, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, tribunals, administrative decision-making, litigation.
