Course aim

To enable students to develop advanced skills in critically analysing ethical management and resolution of conflict in their area of specialisation.

Course content

Students will integrate their knowledge of the management and resolution of conflict in complex contexts including narrative and transformative approaches to mediation and ethical standards and dilemmas including abuses of power and the involvement of vulnerable people (eg children) in mediation.

Students will consolidate their mediation skills including in cross-cultural practice and where the parties differ in age, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, class, disability, language and literacy, professional background and mental health status.

Students will apply their knowledge in simulated professional practice in conflict coaching, dealing with strong emotions, drafting mediation agreements, mediating financial and property disputes, appropriate referral techniques and undertaking multi-party mediation and the involvement of other professionals, advocates or support persons in mediation.
