Course aim

To introduce the fundamental concepts associated with networking technologies with the aim to design and implement a small office, home office (SOHO) network which meets specific business requirements.

Course content

Regulatory organisations and commonly used standards and network models
Basic management principles such as required documentation and policies
SOHO WAN technologies including DSL, cable, and high-speed wireless
Fundamental network security including firewalls, passwords, patching, education and virtual private networks
Commonly used network applications and protocols such as DNS, DHCP, email, and FTP
Current LAN physical media alternatives including twisted pair, fibre optic and wireless
Switching and routing basics
Classful IP addressing
Local Area Network (LAN) standards e.g. Ethernet
802.11 wireless impacts on LANs
