To be acquainted with the central themes, debates and processes within the strategic human resource management process.
Debates about the content and nature of Human Resource management. Introduction to debates within management about strategy. Implications of the following for organisational HR decision-making and approach: contingency, best-practice approaches to HR policy and practice; resource-based view of the firm, industrial organisation; developmental vs instrumental approaches; lifecycle approaches. Types of strategic fit. Issues in business-HR integration. Strategic HR auditing. Measurement of HR performance. Workforce planning: assessment; recruitment and retentions, reprofiling under skill shortage.
